NZ rugby players boss Rob Nichol says New Zealand's Super Rugby stars won't rush back to training, now that Super Rugby can resume under Alert Level 2 restrictions.

Sports Minister Grant Robertson has confirmed professional sport in New Zealand can resume, when the country moves into the next phase of coronavirus recovery, but sporting codes must follow strict rules and regulations.

NZ Rugby has confirmed all five NZ franchises will take part in a 10-week round robin competition, with two matches each weekend.

Before the announcement, Nichol told Parliament's Epidemic Response Committee that he was confident the risk of another outbreak was "low".

"Our professional Super Rugby clubs, even if we get the go ahead on Monday, we won't assemble for a couple of days,'' Nichol says.

"We will take a breath, make sure we have got everything down pat - we have a two-hour workshop tomorrow. We will make sure everyone knows what is happening.

"We've done significant risk-assessment work, significant return-to-training and playing protocol.

"We've got things ready to go. I am very confident that our environments and our people will operate in a way - both within the playing and training environment, but also within their personal lives - that would actually be at a higher level than Level 2."

Cabinet will make its final decision on whether New Zealand will move from Level 3 to 2 on Monday.
