Golf: 'The Match' - Tiger Woods, Tom Brady draw in record TV numbers

Four of sports' biggest names have combined to deliver golf's largest cable television audience on record.

The 2020 edition of 'The Match' pitted Tiger Woods and former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Peyton Manning against Phil Mickelson and New England Patriots great Tom Brady.

The broadcast averaged 5.8 million viewers across four different US networks on Monday, as Americans' renewed appetite for live sport hit fever pitch.

Sportsmediawatch.com reports the telecast topped the 2010 US Masters opening round, which peaked at 4.9 million viewers.

That tournament was the first for Woods after his highly publicised sex scandal and marriage break-up.

'The Match', which raised US$20m for coronavirus relief, comfortably beat the 'Driving Relief' charity event last week, when 2.35 million people tuned in to watch Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff.

The 2018 version of 'The Match' saw Mickelson defeat Woods for a US$9m purse.
