Netball: ANZ Premiership announces June return date

Details of the revamped ANZ Premiership have been revealed, with the competition due to resume on June 19.

Netball's settled on a single location for the resumption of play, with all matches to be played at the Auckland Netball Centre, a venue typically used for the community game. Players are cleared to return to training on May 18.

The competition will be compressed into 10 weeks, with all games being played at the Mt Wellington location.

"They will play probably, at this stage, a Friday, Saturday, Sunday and, in some instances, a Monday," says Netball NZ chief executive Jennie Wyllie.

Games for the 10-week league will be televised live, but with no crowds to ensure that numbers for a gathering at an indoor venue remain under 100.

Strict distancing rules will be applied off the court and Netball NZ has been working through contact-tracing mechanisms.

Wyllie says plenty of creative thinking was needed to plan a return-to-play, with a key focus on the welfare of athletes and officials involved.

"I know there is a lot of interest in seeing our teams back in action, but we also need to make sure that we have a robust set of guidelines to ensure the safety of everyone."

But for three teams, those travel issues remain, as the Steel, Tactix and Pulse will be required to head north on a weekly basis.

That could present a problem for some players, with officials working around the clock to ensure a smooth return.
