NRL 2020: NZ Warriors open to recruiting Julian Savea

NZ Warriors halfback Blake Green feels former All Black Julian Savea would be a great addition to the team, if he was willing to help the club succeed.

On Thursday, Savea announced he was returning to New Zealand, after two seasons in France with Toulon.

In an Instagram post that featured brother Ardie, 'The Bus' said he'd like to return to the Hurricanes, but was open to anything, including the Warriors.

Green says the Warriors should try to get him to Tamworth, where the team is currently based, and put him through his paces.

"I think anyone who wants to play for the Warriors with some passion and dive into the game, we are open to having those players on board," says Green. "Especially a talented player like a former All Black.

"We'll have to get him to put his hand up and come down to training, or even fly him over to Tamworth, so we can see if he can play."

The NRL will resume on May 28, with change likely when play gets back underway.

Gone is the two-referee system, while a 'six-again' call replacing penalties for ruck infringements.

Green thinks the NRL should've stuck with two referees for the remainder of the season, but feels the ruck infringement changes will benefit the Warriors.

"We got asked last week about it [the referee change] and I was against making any changes to the game.

"I'm not sure how it will go down. The two-ref systems worked well and I'm just not sure they needed to make any changes.

"It's a wait-and-see approach, I guess, and all teams are on the same page."

The Warriors have been at their Tamworth base since May 3 and the time away from home has been tough.

Players have been video-calling and chatting with families over the phone, but veteran Green admits not seeing their little ones is hardest.

"It's been really hard," he explains. "It's still a little bit of unknown when they can come over and join us.

"I've seen reports of a few dates being thrown around, but that's all out of our control. It's on the international borders and the individual governments to sort that out.

"All the boys Facetime the kids as much as we can. Most of us have young kids and when they ask if we can come home, it's super tough and challenging.

"The main thing we need some clarity over is a date. If it's four weeks, then we can kinda get our head around that, and plan and look forward to seeing them again."

On Friday, the Warriors will learn where and when they'll play their first game when the season restarts.
