NRL 2020: Players banned from visiting mums on Mother's Day

The NRL has banned players from visiting their Mum's on Mother's Day this Sunday as part of strict biosecurity measures required to get rugby league back up and running.

There had been indications players would be exempted from the strict measures to see their mothers, but all 16 NRL clubs were sent an email on Thursday but no exemption will be granted to ensure the league can resume on May 28.

Players who already live at home with their mothers will be exempt because it is part of their immediate family living arrangements.

"After further consultation with our medical experts, theNRL has determined that Mother's Day is not an acceptable circumstance for players or club officials to leave their residence," a letter obtained by Australian media outlets read.

"The protocols cannot be periodic if we are to achieve our objective.

"It cannot be subject to change because of personal events such as birthdays, anniversaries or occasions such as Mother's Day.

"A black or white decision is required in this instance to ensure no confusion amongst players and officials, the government and the media.

"It's unfortunate but ultimately no different to what all families faced recently over Easter. Any communication in relation to Mother's Day is to occur via telephone or video conferencing."

The players seem to support the decision, with Sydney Roosters utility Brett Morris saying they can use their phones to communicate.

"At the end of the day, we've all got phones. They've all got cameras on them. You can FaceTime," he said.

"She doesn't need to see us face-to-face to know how much we love her."

NRL teams resumed training this week ahead of the season resuming later this month.

There has been no rugby league since March 22 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
