The COVID-19 pandemic has wiped out most live sport all around the globe, but history will never be erased.

While you contemplate streaming yet another Netflix drama or rewatching another replay of your favourite sporting moments, here are some stories that were making news in years past on May 13.

1986

The Cavaliers get their rebel South African rugby tour back on course after losing the first 'test' against the Springboks, with dirt-trackers beating Natal 37-24.

After the 1985 All Blacks tour of South Africa was scrapped, player-power essentially developed the concept of the rebel tour, featuring 28 of the original squad.

The rebels were widely believed to have received large secret payments from the South African union, which was a controversial issue at a time when rugby was still amateur.

The Cavaliers were coached by All Blacks great Colin Meads, and captained by Andy Dalton and Jock Hobbs. On their return to New Zealand, the NZRFU barred the players from participating in the next two All Black tests, spawning the 'Baby Blacks'.

South Africa won the test series 3-1.

1995

Team New Zealand's Black Magic beats Dennis Conner's Stars & Stripes 5-0 to win the America's Cup for the first time.

Syndicate head Peter Blake assembled a 'dream team' of New Zealand sailors. An extremely fast boat was superbly sailed by 1984 Olympic gold medallist Russell Coutts, ably backed up by tactician Brad Butterworth and navigator Tom Schnackenberg.

New Zealand retained the 'Auld Mug' at home in 2000, before the departure of Coutts and Butterworth to Alinghi led to a disastrous 2003 defence, when they were swept by the Swiss syndicate.

2012

Manchester City top Queen's Park Rangers 3-2 to win English Premier League title on goal difference from Manchester United.

City needed an injury-time goal from Sergio Aguero to pip the 'Red Devils', who had won at Sunderland.

United players and manager Sir Alex Ferguson had prematurely celebrated what they thought was a league title win, before news broke of Aguero's late heroics.

Andrew McFadden is appointed NZ Warriors coach until the end of the 2017 season,  after working on an interim basis, since Matt Eliott stood down earlier in the season. The Warriors would just miss out on a playoff spot on points difference.

Despite being a relatively popular coach among both players and fans, 'Cappy' was largely unsuccessful at the helm, with the Warriors finishing ninth, 13th and 10th during his stint.

2016

After 23 tests for the Kiwis, 214 games at four NRL clubs and two Grand Final victories with the Melbourne Storm (2007, 2010), Newcastle Knights co-captain Jeremy Smith announces he will retire at the end of the season.

Brad Lewis: Violent past should halt Sevu Reece's All Black prospects

OPINION: Let's just park the bus on Sevu Reece wearing an All Blacks jersey in 2019.

The Crusaders winger has starred for his adopted Super Rugby franchise, scoring nine tries in seven games and prompting talk of a World Cup call-up for the 22-year-old.

But Reece comes with an asterisk - a really big one

The former Hamilton Boys' High School standout is less than 12 months removed from pleading guilty to common assault.

Reece was discharged without conviction, because the judge felt that would have had serious implications on the Fijian-born’s rugby career.

But Reece's contract with Irish club Connacht was torn up anyway and when you look at the circumstances surrounding the case, it's hard not to argue with that decision.
