Speculation continues to grow that current England rugby union coach Eddie Jones could make a shock switch to the NRL in the near future.

Reports from Australia suggest Jones is one many names that have been mentioned as a possible replacement for Cronulla Sharks head coach John Morris.

Jones recently signed a second contract extension with the Rugby Football Union (RFU) to take him through to the 2023 Rugby World Cup, and according to The Independent, no formal approach has been made.

But that hasn't stopped the excitement around a possible move for Jones, who would bring 25 years of coaching experience to any team he joins.

Dual-code legend Mat Rogers, who previously played for the Sharks before moving to rugby union where he played under Jones at the Wallabies, is excited by the reports.

"He's a brilliant coach and a hard taskmaster," Rogers told AAP. "He will get the best out of his players. The great coaches demand a lot from their players. Look at Des Hasler, Craig Bellamy and Wayne Bennett. These guys are hard taskmasters but they are fair.

"Alan Jones did it [at Balmain], and I would put Eddie Jones on another level in his work ethic. I can see him being a success 100 times over.

"Whoever landed [Jones] as coach would do well. It might be a year or two transition until he gets the squad he wants. But he is a career coach. There is no way I look at it where I can't see him being a success, the way he operates."

Former Wallabies coach Michael Cheika recently told Fox Sports that Jones would make a successful NRL coach if he had good support people around him.

Cheika grew up with Jones and is currently working as an assistant at the Sydney Roosters.

Even though he's been linked to the Sharks, the Sydney Morning Herald claims it is Jones' "dream" to one day coach the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

The Sharks are currently 14th on the NRL ladder with just one win in their opening four games of the season.

Morris admitted he was shocked with the rumours which came out earlier this week.

"They came from left field," he said. "I can't control that, I can't control the rumours or innuendo around the game ... I can't get caught up in off-field matters like that.

"My contract goes until the end of 2021. I'm really committed to this club and building something special."
