NRL 2020: Knights battle back to draw against Panthers, Sea Eagles torch struggling Bulldogs

The Newcastle Knights and Penrith Panthers have played out a rare NRL draw, with the scores locked up at 14-14 draw after a 90-minute golden point thriller on Sunday.

Elsewhere Tom Trbojevic inspired the Manly Sea Eagles to a commanding 32-6 win over the winless Canterbury Bulldogs.

But the Knights' remarkable fightback was the main talking point, as they overcame an early 14-0 deficit, and the loss of two key players to send the match to golden point  in Campbelltown.

Both teams remain unbeaten after three rounds, sitting below the Parramatta Eels and Canberra Raiders following the first week back after the season was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Newcastle was on the back foot from the start as they lost star halfback Mitchell Pearce (concussion)  and hooker Connor Watson (ankle) in the opening minutes to injury.

The Panthers opened the scoring when Viliame Kikau crashed through for opening points in the 19th minute.

Moments later, they were awarded an eight-point try when Edrick Lee accidentally kicked Kurt Capewell's face after he planted the ball over the line.

The Knights seemed out of the contest, but  Jacob Saifiti scored just before the break to give Newcastle some hope heading into the second half.

Two unconverted tries in 10 minutes by Knights' centre Bradman Best levelled the scores and neither side could break the deadlock before full-time or after 10 minutes of extra time.

Panthers rookie Matt Burton missed all five field goal attempts for his side, while Knights duo Tex Hoy (two) and Kurt Mann (one) also watched their shots sail wide during the additional 10 minutes.

Panthers coach Ivan Cleary felt his side should have won the contest.

"It was definitely a lost opportunity in that sense. We put ourselves in a position right through the game to be able to take advantage of dominance," Cleary said.

"But we just couldn't seem to land the knockout blow once it was 14-0."

The Panthers now have just five days to prepare for their next match against the Warriors in Campbelltown.

Also on Sunday, Trbojevic had a hand in five of his side's seven tries, as the Sea Eagles claimed their second win of the season.

Trbojevic scored a double and set up another three tries in a match where Manly never seemed troubled by the Bulldogs.

The fullback scored the first two tries of the game, before setting up Brad Parker's first four pointer just before the break, where the Sea Eagles led 14-0.

Trbojevic then set up the first two tries in the second half when Jorge Taufua scored, before Parker crossed for his second.

Winger Reuben Garrick and back-rower Curtis Sironen then crossed to complete the rout while  Jake Averillo scored a consolation try for the Bulldogs in the 70th minute.

The Bulldogs are one of four teams without a win after three rounds, while it is their worst start to a season since 1996.

Bulldogs coach Dean Pay is hopeful NZ international Kierna Foran will be fit to face the winless Dragons next week.

Playmaker Foran hasn't played since undergoing shoulder reconstruction following New Zealand's win over Great Britain last November.
