NRL 2020: Phil Gould predicts NZ Warriors won't win more than four games this season

NRL commentator and former coach Phil Gould has made a bold call, claiming the NZ Warriors will only win four games this season.

The Warriors have won twice this year, so Gould is predicting Stephen Kearney's side will only two more games in the remaining 15 rounds of competition.

Despite a sluggish start to a season suspended after two rounds due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Warriors have won two of their three games since play resumed, claiming an 18-0 win over St George Illawarra Dragons and beating North Queensland Cowboys 37-26 on Friday night.

"I think they're going to be up and down like this all year, depending on the quality of their opposition," Gould has told Wide World of Sports' The Final Whistle.

"They've had two wins against two teams that have performed pretty poorly against them and in between, they were beaten 26-0 by the Panthers.

"Given they're over here in Australia and they're under such difficulty, I think we're going to see wild fluctuations in their form.

"I'd probably limit them to about four wins this year, being realistic, so two more wins, but the game appreciates what they're doing. We wouldn't have a competition."

Former Cronulla Sharks captain Paul Gallen is shocked with Gould's prediction, saying he'll shout the pair lunch, if the Warriors only claim two more wins this season.

Gould's criticism comes days after he blasted the club for not being successful enough in their time in the NRL. He tweeted the Warriors had underachieved since its inception in 1995.

"After 25 years, the Warriors really should be the strongest club in the NRL," he said. "Should be regular top four.

"It's a whole country. Unless someone starts now, we will be saying the same thing in another 25 years."

His tweet came after a fan asked him on the rumour that Sharks prop Toby Rudolf had reportedly backflipped on a deal with the Warriors, after agreeing to terms with the club.

The Warriors have a tough fortnight ahead, as they face the South Sydney Rabbitohs, before tackling the Melbourne Storm, a team they have not beaten since 2015.
