American golf legend Jack Nicklaus wins his first Major title, topping Arnold Palmer by 3-strokes in an 18-hole playoff at the US Open in Oakmont.

The right-hander was just 22 at the time and the reigning US Amateur champion. A year earlier he had finished runner up to Palmer at the same event before he had turned professional. By the time Nicklaus had called time on his career, Nicklaus had won 73 PGA Tour titles, 18 Major Championships - a record which still stands, and competed in 164 Majors - another record that still stands.

A day after being declared a person of interest concerning the murders Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, OJ Simpson becomes the subject of one of the most iconic moments in television history

Simpson didn't turn himself in - instead he and his longtime friend Al Cowlings, took the police and the world on the most enthralling low-speed pursuit in history in the infamous white Ford Bronco.

American television stations interrupted coverage of the NBA Finals to broadcast the incident live.

An estimated 95 million people watched the pursuit and the trial that followed his arrest captivated the world.

Simpson is regarded as one of the greatest NFL running backs in history after being picked No.1 in the 1969 draft.

Simpson was a five-time Pro Bowler, scoring 67 touchdowns in a 10-year career.

'The juice' received a not-guilty verdict on the murder charges by a jury of his peers.

1995

The Rugby World Cup semi-final between South Africa and France was delayed by an hour due to heavy rain and violent storms. South Africa eventually scraped home 19-15 to book a spot in the final against the All Blacks.

Had the match not been played the hosts would have gone out of their own tournament due to their inferior disciplinary record in the competition.

The Springboks' sole try came from flanker Ruben Kruger and it proved to be the difference between the two sides.

South Africa withstood a French goalline onslaught in the final few minutes of the epic test, and despite appeals from several French players that they had crossed the line, referee Derek Beven ruled a knock-on and the game was over.

The Springboks would beat the All Blacks 15-12 in the final.

1999

Australia and South Africa play out possibly the greatest one-day match in cricket history.

The 100 overs of the World Cup semi-final at Edgbaston had just about everything.

A memorable finish, a match-altering partnership, a seam-bowling masterclass and the greatest bowler of all time pulling his side back into the match.

Australia batted first and were in deep trouble at 68/4 when Steve Waugh and Michael Beven added 90 for the fifth wicket. Both scored half-centuries as Australia managed to muster 213 in fifty overs.

Shaun Pollock and Allan Donald were superb for the Proteas, taking 9/68 between them.

South Africa were on track for victory at 48/0 in the 13th over - enter Shane Warne. The leg-spinning whiz took three quick wickets to stunt the Proteas run chase. Warne finished with 4/29, but that looked in vein after Lance Kluesner smashed Damien Fleming's first two balls of the final over through the covers for four

But then, with two balls to spare and one run needed, Klusener set off on that fateful run, only to find that Donald had lead in his boots, and South Africa's dream died in the cruellest manner possible. Kluesner was run out and the game was tied - Australia were through because they had beaten South Africa the Super Six stage.

2017

Scotland gained sweet revenge by beating the Wallabies for just the third time in almost 35 years with a dogged 24-19 win.

After trailing for the first 57 minutes of the match, the Wallabies hit the lead when Bernard Foley converted a Will Genia try.

But instead of rolling over, Scotland hit back with their third try of the afternoon in the 62nd minute, courtesy of Hamish Watson, to regain a five-point lead.

From there the world's sixth-ranked rugby side managed to repel numerous late attacking Wallabies threats to record a victory that somewhat made up for their one-point heartbreak at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Israel Folau takes aim at transgender children, gays

Today in sports history: June 17 - OJ Simpson and the white Ford Bronco

srael Folau has launched another attack on gay people during a sermon at his Sydney church and also criticised young people being allowed to change gender.

The former rugby star described homosexuality as a sin and claimed the devil was behind primary school children being allowed to decide if they wanted to change gender.

"This is what the devil is trying to do - to instil into the government, into this world, into society - and it is slowly happening," Folau said in his Sunday sermon at The Truth of Jesus Christ Church in Kenthurst.

"The sad thing is why a lot of people out there that are non-Christians say bad things about the church, is because a lot of the churches allow those things to happen.

"They say that a man and a man should be able to be married, and there is nothing wrong with it. This buys into the theme of pleasing man rather than pleasing God and standing up for the truth."
