Boxing: Kiwi Mark Hunt, Paul Gallen showdown looming in October

Kiwi UFC legend Mark Hunt and Aussie rugby league hardman Paul Gallen seem poised for a cross-code collision in the boxing ring in October.

And the Daily Telegraph reports the mouthwatering match-up may take place at Auckland's Spark Arena as a Halloween showdown in October.

The bout was originally proposed earlier this year, with Hunt reportedly signing a contract in March, then publicly calling out his rival for cowering away. When COVID-19 closed down sport across the world, that window of opportunity seemed to close.

But promoter Matt Rose has told the Telegraph it's back on.

"This fight has attracted huge interest and will be a sellout wherever we decide to take the fight," he says. "Gallen is an NRL legend and one of, it not the toughest footballer in the last 20 years, and Mark Hunt is a UFC legend that hits harder than any fight in country.

"It's scary and makes for a perfect Halloween showdown. I hope to lock away the venue in the coming weeks, before getting the final sign-off from both fighters."

Auckland-born Hunt, 46, has lived in Australia most of his life and enjoys a huge cult following across the Tasman. The former world kick-boxing champion had 18 UFC outings for eight wins, eight losses and a draw, but hasn't fought since December 2018.

Gallen, 38, is an NRL great, a winning State of Origin captain with New South Wales and a premiership winner with Cronulla Sharks. Significantly, he actually has more boxing experience than Hunt, with a nine-win, one-draw professional record.

The tie came in his last outing against Aussie league great Barry Hall last November.
