Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso looks set to return to Formula One with Renault in 2021.

Alonso, who left Formula One at the end of 2018 after a final season with McLaren, won his championship titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006.

The Spaniard has made no secret of his desire to return to the Formula One grid and with the French manufacturer having a vacancy, the popular 38-year-old is the sensible choice.

The BBC reports Alonso will join Frenchman Esteban Ocon and replace Australian Daniel Ricciardo, who is moving to McLaren at the end of the 2020 season.

"I don't know if he is going to join or not with us, but definitely if he could come back here I'd be very happy," Ocon said last week.

Alonso has contested several iconic events in recent years, performing admirably at the 2018 Indianapolis 500, where he led several laps, after qualifying inside the top 10.

In his time away from the F1 grid, Alonso won Le Mans twice, as well as the 2019 FIA World Endurance Championship.

Alonso's move to Renault means four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel is likely to sit out the season, unless Mercedes are willing to partner the German with world champion Lewis Hamilton.
