Motorsport: Kiwi teen Liam Lawson uninjured, as car catches fire during F3 race

Kiwi teenager Liam Lawson has escaped uninjured after his car caught fire during the latest Formula 3Three race in Mogyoród, Hungary on Sunday (NZ time).

Lawson was fourth on the fifth lap at Hungaroring, when the rear of his car caught fire, leaving a trail of oil on the rack track.

The 18-year-old from Hastings managed to safely get his car off the track, before getting out with his Hitech Grand Prix vehicle while it was still smoking.

The race was red flagged to allow the marshals to clear up the oil.

"Gutted about the result, but got some nice photos," he said on his Instagram page.

Despite the incident, Lawson, who won the second race of the season in Austria, is eighth on the F3 standings with 25 points, trailing Aussie Oscar Piastri by 37 points.

Meanwhile in Formula Two, Kiwi Marcus Armstong was forced to retire from his race, also in Hungary.

Armstrong is fifth in the F2 standings, on 34 points, 39 behind Russian Robert Shwartzman.
