Motorsport: Scott Dixon maintains IndyCar lead after solid Iowa 250 run

Scott Dixon's fine form has continued, finishing a creditible fifth in the second Iowa IndyCar 250 to maintain his championship lead.

Starting 17th, the Kiwi almost mirrored his effort of Saturday, when qualified 18th and rose to second.

The race was far less dramatic than 24 hours earlier, with defending champion Josef Newgarden leading from flag to flag to secure his first win of the season.

Australian Will Power scored a much-needed podium after a frustrating start to his campaign, coming home a second behind his Penske teammate, with Graham Rahal completing the top three.

Dixon finished less than a second behind his nearest championship rival and Saturday race winner Simon Pagenaud, who was superb again, after starting at the back of the pack.

"We didn't have the speed this weekend," Dixon said afterwards. "The team did a great job in the pits and we have come out of here with a decent points lead.

"Looking forward to the next race in Mid-Ohio, the car has been really good this year on road courses, so we will dig deep and get the No.9 car back in the winner's circle."

Dixon leads Pagenaud by 48 points, as the teams head to Mid-Ohio for the Honda Indy 200 next month, before the Indianapolis 500 on August 24.
