NRL 2020: Bunker officials dropped after controversial try ruling during Dragons' defeat against Sharks

The NRL has confirmed bunker officials Steve Clark and Ben Galea have been dropped, after incorrectly awarding a try to Cronulla Sharks during their win over St George Illawarra Dragons.

Cronulla lock Jack Williams was awarded a try against St George at Kogarah, after the decision was sent upstairs by on-field referee Grant Atkins.

Replays showed Dragons fullback Matt Dufty got to the ball first and prevented a try, but the bunker saw things differently.

After the match, the NRL confirmed Clark and Galea would be axed from Sunday's game between Gold Coast Titans and Penrith Panthers, and replaced by Jared Maxwell and Bryan Norrie.

"The bunker decision to award a try to Jack Williams in tonight's Sharks-Dragons game was incorrect," says NRL head of football Graham Annesley. "Steve Clark and Ben Galea were due to officiate again tomorrow in the Titans-Panthers game as bunker officials.

"They have now been relegated, and will be replaced by Jared Maxwell and Brian Norrie."

Dragons coach Paul McGregor is livid with the decision, as his side sits four points outside the top eight with nine games remaining.

"It was pretty clear, right," says McGregor. "How do they keep getting it wrong and who's accountable for it, because it's a stuff up and, in the end, there's the difference.

"All you guys should make a song and dance, and do something about it, because it's not good enough."

Sharks coach John Morris has downplayed the call, which sees his side move inside the NRL's top eight.

"What goes around comes around in this game and at the end of an 80-minute game like that, I don't think the Jack Williams try, if it was proven to be no-try, was such a huge play," says Morris.
