NRL 2020: Sonny Bill Williams' staggering payday revealed ahead of Sydney Roosters return

Sonny Bill Williams will reportedly pocket AU$150,000 (NZ$161,000) to complete the remainder of the NRL season with the Sydney Roosters.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the Roosters initially attempted to register the former All Black on a AU$120,000 (NZ$129,000) contract, but that was rejected by the NRL and the two parties eventually agreed on a deal worth slightly more.

Williams is currently en route to Australia from the UK and will begin a 14-day quarantine before joining the Roosters, where he played 45 games between 2013-14 for the remainder of the season.

He is set to be available for the Roosters' final four games of the regular season - the first against the Canberra Raiders on September 5 - before playing in the finals.

If the Roosters reach the Grand Final, Williams could feature in upto eight games.

Despite the massive payday, Williams insists he's not doing it for the money.

"I'm not doing it for money," he says. "It wasn't even part of my thinking.

"I knew it wasn’t going to be much. It's more about the challenge."

Brisbane Bronco coach Anthony Seibold has sent a warning to Williams about the tough challenge he can expect after watching Ben Te'o struggle to get upto speed in the 13-man code.

Te'o made his rugby league return last month after a six year absence for the injury-ravaged Broncos.

Williams has played a handful of rugby league games this year, but hasn't played since March.

"It's been challenging for Ben - it's been probably a little harder than what he thought it was going to be," Seibold said on Wednesday.

"The ball-in-play time is significantly larger in rugby league compared to international and club rugby.

"Ben has felt the game physically has advanced immensely since he last played and from a rugby union players' perspective it's been really challenging."

Williams and his family are due to land in Sydney on Thursday and will quarantine in a three-bedroom Sydney apartment.
