NRL 2020: Veteran playmaker Blake Green still in dark over NZ Warriors future

NZ Warriors half Blake Green is still in the dark over why he's no longer wanted by his NRL club.

Green is yet to speak to owner Mark Robinson, after he and Gerard Beale were named as two players whose contracts wouldn't be renewed when they expire at the end of this season.

Robinson has since joined the team at the base in Gosford, but hasn't explained to the 33-year-old why he went public with his intentions not to re-sign him.

“Not as yet," Green says, when asked if he'd spoken with Robinson. "I'm sure we will in the coming days."

Not that Green believes he'll have much to offer the conversation.

"I don't think I have to say too much, to be honest," he says. "I'll probably just listen.

"I'm sure he'll have a few things to say to me. I'm not sure how that’s going to go."

Green confirms Warriors recruitment manager Peter O'Sullivan told him a few days before the Brisbane Broncos match that he'd be surplus to requirements after this season and he should begin searching for a new club.

The Warriors will have 14 players off contract at the end of the year, the second-most of any NRL franchise, but he's yet to hear exactly why he's on the outer.

"Not at this stage," Green says. "It sort of happened quite quickly.

"We had a review the next day, jumped into training on Monday and it was a big day for us, so today is our first day off.

"We'll see what happens in the coming days."

To his credit, the veteran showed no signs of unease against the Broncos. In fact, he responded with arguably his best performance of the season so far, guiding the side back from a halftime deficit to a much-needed 26-16 win.

Green says he still has a passion for the game and retirement hasn't crossed his mind.

"I have still got a desire to play footy,' he says. "I'm not sure anyone knows the right answer, but everyone I’ve spoken to says that you know when it’s the right time [to retire].

"I still love playing, still love turning up to training and doing it, so as long as I can bring a contribution to a footy team and have an impact on the result of games, I want to continue to play."

All that matters from here is contributing to his club on the field, Green adds.

"I get judged on how I perform on the weekend, so my job was to perform as best I could on Saturday against the Broncos and I’m going to do the same against the Titans on Friday."
