The father and trainer of UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has died, aged 57.

Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov was diagnosed with coronavirus in May and had been treated at a military hospital in Moscow.

Nurmagomedov's health had been in serious jeopardy since, suffering a heart attack and a stroke caused by COVID-19.

RT.com reports Nurmagomedov passed away, due to complications arising from the infection.

Nurmagomedov was considered by some as the best grappling trainer in combat sports, after coaching his son for more than 20 years.

Khabib Nurmagomedov is undefeated through 28 fights over 12 years and is set to defend his UFC title against American Justin Gaetjhe later this year.

Rival Conor McGregor, whom the Russian dismantled in October 2108, has offered his condolences to his fellow fighter.
