Golf: Lydia Ko two shots off lead Women's British Open

Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko is within two shots of the lead at the halfway stage of the Women's British Open at Royal Troon in Scotland on Saturday (NZ time).

Ko shot an even-par 71 in the second round to remain one-over for the tournament, and sit in a five-way tie for fourth.

Ko started the day with a bogey on the opening hole, before converting 11 consecutive pars. She then birdied the 13th, finishing the round with five more pars.

Blustery and wet conditions have made it challenging for all competitions in the first major of the year, with Sweden's Daniela Holmqvist leading the way on one-under par, the only player with a score higher than even-par.

Overnight leader Amy Olson, fell away with a 10-over-par 81 to reach halfway on six over, while defending champion Hinako Shibuno finished 12-over-par after two rounds.

Ko was pleased with her placing after two rounds.

"I feel like I played really solid," she said.

"Nice to have a birdie coming down on the back nine to finish level-par but it's super tough out there, so patience is going to be very important for me on the weekend."

Ko's hasn't won a tournament since April 2018, but she's starting to discover the form which saw her once ranked top of women's golf.

Two weeks ago, she finished tied for second at the Marathon Classic in Ohio, but did hold a five-shot lead with six holes to play, while last week she finished in a tie for 12th at the Scottish Open.

Ko says she's feeling much more confident since changing swing coach with Sean Foley helping the Kiwi.

"I feel like every competitive round I get in, there's a bit more confidence that builds in," she says. "The more times I put myself in contention or in a good position it gives me confidence about my game.

"Sean [Foley] has been trying to get me to swing aggressively and freely and I feel like I hit it better that way.

"Sometimes it's easier said than done, but I've just got to go out there and not worry about it and just believe in myself.

Meanwhile fellow Kiwi Danny Lee is sitting in fourth at the halfway stage of the PGA Tour's opening FedEx Cup Playoffs event - The Northern Trust in Boston.

Lee is 12-under for the tournament, three shots behind Dustin Johnson, although many golfers are still out on the course.

Elsewhere, Ryan Fox is in a tie for 39th after two rounds at the Wales Open at the Celtic Manor Resort.
