NRL 2020: Rookie revelation Paul Turner eyes long future with NZ Warriors

Fair to say Paul Turner raised a few eyebrows with his NRL debut.

On Sunday, the young half came close to scoring two tries in the NZ Warriors' 20-14 comeback win over Canterbury Bulldogs and has had fans salivating over a potential diamond unearthed.

But the 20-year-old isn't letting himself get carried away just yet.

"As soon as the game finished on the weekend, my mind was already set on the following week, the next game," Turner says.

"It was exciting just training. I was biding my time and waiting for my opportunity."

Turner recalls being overcome with emotion, when he discovered his debut was on the table.

"I found out on Wednesday, after training. Coach just came into my room and said 'welcome to the NRL, mate' - I was a bit emotional after that.

"It all happened so fast - I didn't have time to think. I rang my old man and told him the good news.

"After I hung up, he had a little cry to my mum."

Turner admits the experience was surreal, especially given the tumultuous season the squad has endured.

No reserve grade meant he was short of game time, before being thrust into his first-grade debut.

Turner's debut has been compared to that of Kiwis legend Benji Marshall and he's earned high praise from teammates as well.

"He's a flower, he's blossoming," says hooker Karl Lawton. "You can only imagine what the future will bring him.

"He's definitely a first grader that's for sure."

Turner came up through the ranks with fellow young half Chanel Harris-Tavita and has had plenty of help growing his game this year.

"My development this year's been good, learning off [Blake Green], Kodi [Nikorima] and Chanel," Turner adds. "I've learned a lot off Chanel - me and him used to play U20s together.

"When I was younger, he was my idol. Coming up in the 20s grade, he's always the one I'd look out for.

"Hopefully, I play a game with him this year or hopefully next year."

Fellow Northlander Adam Blair has taken Turner under his wing, helping him navigate the journey to first grade.

"He's helped me a lot with this process," he says.

"There's a saying we have during the game. I hurt my shoulder and he just said: "Māori as, do it for the north."

"That gave me motivation to keep pushing on and it gave me energy."

Turner has been earmarked as a first-team candidate for a while and now he seems set to stay.

"My intention is I want to stay at this club. I plan on playing for this club in the future."

For now, the Warriors look ahead to the Knights this weekend and chat about making the finals has crept into camp.

"We're not too far away from playing finals footy," says Lawton. "We just need to string a few more wins together and we're right in the running for it."
