Rugby: Julian Savea on the Hurricanes radar for 2021 Super Rugby campaign following short late-season stint

Late Hurricanes recruit Julian Savea may have done enough to earn a fulltime Super Rugby contract for next season.

The former All Blacks wing joined the squad as cover only a fortnight ago and although he didn't feature in Super Rugby Aotearoa, Hurricanes coach Jason Holland has been impressed in training and fits a need for next year.

Savea returned to New Zealand recently following a horror stint with French club Toulon, and has set his sights on reigniting his career at home, and Holland has slots to fill in the outside backs.

"He was good, I really enjoyed having him in, and he’s in good nick," Holland says.

"We liked everything we saw. It was tough for us to get him an opportunity because we had guys who’d worked really hard all year who’d earned that right in the last couple of weeks

"I was impressed with what I saw and it'd be good to see him get into some Mitre 10 Cup and put his hand up."

Savea made his on-field return with Wellington club Oriental-Rongotai two weeks ago, wearing the No.12 jersey.

The powerful ball runner told Newshub he was keen to explore a potential future in the midfield, much in the mould of former All Black star Ma'a Nonu.

"Interesting one -  not sure [what is Savea’s best position]. I watched him play 12 for Ories and he was pretty solid there,” Holland sats..

"We’ll have a good chat with Jules once he gets playing footy, but I think that’s the most important thing, it doesn’t really matter where he’s playing, he just needs to get on the park."

And that begins with the upcoming Mitre 10 Cup, where Savea says he is open to a  move north with either North Harbour or Auckland as he now resides in 'The City of Sails'.

"That's the decision I have to make," Savea told Newshub earlier this month.
