Rugby league: Sonny Bill Williams' challenges Phil Gould to create off-field pathways for Māori, Pasifika players at NZ Warriors

Cross-code superstar Sonny Bill Williams has challenged new NZ Warriors consultant Phil Gould to help minorities thrive.

Gould will work with the Auckland-based NRL club from next season, assisting in several fields, including the development of pathways for young Kiwi rugby league talent.

The NRL coaching guru has previously worked with Northland rugby league, discovering the likes of James Fisher-Harris, Caleb Atkins and Corey Harawira-Naera for Penrith Panthers.

Williams believes Gould is a great fit for the Warriors, but has urged the former New South Wales coach to mentor and develop young Pacific Island and Māori players.

"For me, I look at things from a perspective of what's best for my people - Polynesians, Māori, Aboriginals, the minorities," Williams has told Gould on Nine's 100% Footy.

"I'd love to see you take someone under your wing and help us thrive, not just on the field."

Williams hopes Gould's influence at the club will help players decide their futures beyond their playing careers.

"The numbers are we make up 50% or more on the field, so obviously we're thriving in that sense, but what I would like you to do is help us thrive off the field, whether that be coaches, CEOs, on the boards, that type of level."

"I'm really excited about what you're going to do at the Warriors, my bro."

Gould says he is excited about the future of the club.

"My role is around the future of the club, it's relationships with the local clubs, its own personal player development and it's profile here in Australia," he says.

"The club are very passionate about the next 18 months to two years and they are very keen to see New Zealand do well.

"It's important the NRL invests in New Zealand rugby league and invests in the development of Pacific Island players, both there and here in Australia."
