Supercars 2020: Kiwi Scott McLaughlin bolts to Townsville victory

Scott McLaughlin has returned to the top of the Supercars podium, claiming the chequered flag in Townsville on Sunday.

After qualifying in pole position, McLaughlin took out the final race of the weekend to extend his lead in the drivers' championship.

McLaughlin eased away in the closing stages to take the win, while Cam Waters had just 1.8 seconds over Jamie Whincup for second, with Brad Jones Racing pair Percat and Todd Hazelwood fourth and fifth.

The win sees McLaughlin finish a challenging weekend on a high note, after placing seventh and 13th in the previous two races of the round.

Closest rival Whincup won both of those races to narrow the deficit on the Kiwi, but McLaughlin has now restored a 123-point lead at the top of the standings.

"It was an awesome battle with Cam," says McLaughlin. "He was fast."

Fellow Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen was never a factor from 13th on the grid and finished eighth, losing further ground in the championship.

The series stays in Townsville, where the next round of racing takes place next weekend.
