Tennis: Kiwi umpire Dimitar Trifunovski swaps Wimbledon for Riccarton

At this time of year, tennis umpire Dimitar Trifunovski is normally busy officiating Grand Slam events like the US Open and Wimbledon.

But like everyone, COVID-19 has hit the Kiwi hard, so this week he's plying his trade at an U13 event in Christchurch.

"It's a bit of a different level of course," Trifunovski tells Newshub.

Trifunovski has called for the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in more than 20 Grand Slam finals.

"I still get butterflies sometimes in the big matches," he adds. "I do love that."

But Trifunovski will soon upgrade from calling lines for Kiwi juniors. Next week, he will fly to New York for the US Open, the sport's first major tournament since the pandemic struck.

"I don't really know what to expect, but I'm excited to be going."
