On this day in 2016.....

New Zealand sailing pair 2016 Peter Burling and Blair Tuke win gold in the 49er class at the Rio Olympics.

Four years after agonisingly missing out on the top spot of the dais, the two sailing maestros dominated the regatta to cement themselves as two of the best in the world on the water.

12 months later Burling would helm Team New Zealand to victory at the America's Cup with Tuke by his side.

August 18 provided a medal bonanza for New Zealand, specifically on the water, with kayak queen Lisa Carrington scooping bronze in the K1-500.

Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie won silver in the women's 470, while Alex Maloney and Molly Meech achieved the same in the women's 49er FX.

Shot put star Tom Walsh won bronze in the evening to cap a wonderful day for the Silver Fern in Rio.

1934

The end of one of the most monumental test cricket batting partnerships in history. England needed only a draw at The Oval to retain the Ashes - but Australian batsman Bill Ponsford made his last test a memorable one.

His 266 achieved the rare feat of outscoring the great Don Bradman, who scored 244, as Australia inflicted a heavy defeat on their cricketing rivals.

Their stand of 451, made in only five hours, was then the highest for any wicket in tests and remains in the top four today.

New Zealand pair Martin Crowe and Andrew Jones broke the record in 1991 against Sri Lanka, compiling 467 in nearly two days at the crease, but that has since been broken twice.

The record now stands at 624, set by Sri Lankan legends Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar

2000

An unforgettable cricket victory for England at Headingley,  and the first two-day test in over 50 years. When West Indies began their second innings midway through the afternoon session of day two, they were exactly 100 runs behind England.

After 26 overs, they had been demolished for just 61 and England had beaten them by an innings for the first time since 1966. England seamer Andy Caddick took four wickets in an over, the last three all castled by swinging yorkers.

2012

Argentina made history by playing their first Rugby Championship game.

The Pumas' first venture was against South Africa, who scored a comfortable 27-6 win at Newlands in Cape Town.

Zane Kirchner, Marcell Coetzee and Bryan Habana scored tries for the hosts, who lost hooker Bismarck du Plessis to a serious knee injury in the opening minutes.

2018

Australian mare Winx wins her Australasian record 26th consecutive race at the re-named Winx Stakes at Royal Randwick in Sydney.

Winx retired in April 2019 with an incredible 33 race win streak intact.

Tasman have backed up their first week thrashing of Wellington with a 23-8 win over Canterbury in Christchurch.

The Mako flew out of the sheds to immediately assert their dominance over their 'big brothers'.

David Havili brushed off some shaky defence to set up Levi Aumua who opened the scoring in the fourth minute at Orangetheory Stadium.

The red and blacks were undone defensively 11 minutes later, when winger Leicester Fainga'anuku powered past four defenders to score an excellent try down the left-wing.

A Brett Cameron penalty got the hosts on the scoreboard as they went into the half time break down 18-3.

The Mako started the second half much like the first, with attacking dominance - but a turnover from fullback Josh Mckay saw him sprint 90 metres to get the hosts within 10.

The visitors hit back within minutes, flanker Shannon Frizell scoring off the back of a lineout drive to extend the lead back to 15 at 23-8.
