New Zealand Rugby (NZR) has confirmed the Bledisloe Cup rugby tests against Australia will be held in New Zealand - and won't clash with the election.

One of the events was originally tipped to be played on New Zealand's election date of October 17.

On Monday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern insisted she was open to staging the two major events on the same day.

"I think that New Zealanders are perfectly able to engage in the Bledisloe Cup and an election," she said. "I'll be trying to do the same.

"I think the most important thing is that New Zealanders get that chance to see that match. It will be up to the rugby unions to determine what day they're held.

"These are unusual times and I'm pretty sure that we are able, as a nation, to accommodate both a rugby game and an election."

But now it has been revealed the tests will be held at Wellington's Sky Stadium on Sunday October 11 and at Eden Park in Auckland on Sunday October 18 - the day after the election.

There were also fears the competition would be held in Australia due to New Zealand's strict COVID-19 requirements but NZR announced they had eased lockdown restrictions for the Wallabies to come into the country.

Under the new Government guidelines, the Australian squad will be able to train fully four days after arriving in the country, given all squad members return a negative COVID-19 test on day three.

"We acknowledge that this has been a complex and challenging puzzle to solve and we're grateful that both rugby organisations, together with our Government, have come together to get these matches across the line," NZR CEO Mark Robinson said in a statement announcing the tests.

"Our fans both here in New Zealand and around the world have long been looking forward to the resumption of international rugby and we're excited to finally lock the details into the calendar."
