Cricket: Brendon McCullum claims first coaching title as Trinbago Knight Riders win Caribbean Premier League

Former Blackcaps captain Brendon McCullum has won his first Twenty-20 title as a coach, leading Trinbago Knight Riders to the Caribbean Premier League title.

An unbeaten 84 from opening batsman Lendl Simmons saw McCullum's side beat St Lucia Zouks by eight wickets.

After bowling the Zouks out for 154, the Knight Riders chased down the total with 11 balls to spare.

But they had to do it the hard way, as McCullum's side were 19/2 in the fourth over, when Blackcaps all-rounder Scott Kuggerligijn claimed the wicket of fellow Kiwi Tim Seifert for four.

Fellow Blackcap Colin Munro missed the final for the Knight Riders due to injury.

"It's incredibly special," says McCullum. "The players have worked hard and sacrificed so much - everyone has - but they wanted it bad this year."

In his second season in charge of the Knight Riders, after previously playing for them, McCullum says the players were desperate to win the title, after finishing third last season.

The title is the Knight Riders' fourth, as they become the first team to go through an entire Caribbean Premier League season undefeated. They have also won three of the last four titles.

McCullum will now head to the United Arab Emirates, where he'll coach the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League, starting September 20.
