Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko has fallen out of contention in the second women's Major of the year at the ANA Inspiration in California after a poor second round on Saturday (NZ time).

The New Zealander started the day in a tie for ninth, just three shots off the lead, but a two-over 74 second round saw Ko slip down the leaderboard at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage.

Ko now sits one under for the tournament in a eight-way tie for 36th alongside Megan Khang, Lei Ye, Sarah Schmelzel, Hannah Green, Perrine Delacour, Nasa Hataoka and Amy Yang.

Her round consisted of four bogeys (first, third, eighth and 13th holes) with two birdies on the seventh and 11th holes.

The tournament is usually scheduled for April, but the coronavirus pandemic saw the event delayed. Ko won the tournament in 2016.

While Ko will likely survive the cut, she finds herself 10 shots behind leader Nelly Korda.

American  Korda holds a two-shot lead over South Korea's Mirim Lee.

Elsewhere, Tim Wilkinson is holding his own late in the second round at the first PGA Tour event of the new season at the Safeway Open in Napa, California.

Wilkinson is in a tie for 12th with a second of eight-under, seven shots behind American Sam Burns.

Meanwhile, in Europe, Kiwi Ryan Fox is also for 12th after two rounds at the Portugal Masters.

Fox shot a two-under 69 second round to sit six-under for the tournament.

The 33-year-old is eight shots behind leader Julien Guerrier.
