Mitre 10 Cup: Canterbury convert - Manasa Mataele's Ranfurly Shield role reversal

With nine current All Blacks on show, Saturday's Ranfurly Shield match between Canterbury and Taranaki is one of the most highly anticipated in recent history.

The last time Taranaki claimed the shield was against Canterbury three years ago, but their star that day - Manasa Mataele - is now playing for the red and blacks.

This time he'll be helping Canterbury defend the shield, after making a move to the mainland for love.

"Yes, [partner Martha Lolohea] was one of the main reasons that I came down here," Mataele tells Newshub.

Lolohea will also wear the no.14 Jersey for Canterbury on Saturday, as a promising wing in the Farah Palmer Cup.

"It was love at first sight, let me tell you now," Lolohea says.

Meanwhile, Richie Mo'unga's keen to make an impression as well, as his All Blacks first-five battle with Beauden Barrett steps up a gear.

"Ranfurly Shield games are not like any other game," says the Canterbury pivot. "They're tough, they're test-like."

The likes of All Blacks Jordie Barrett and Sam Whitelock will be on show, the kind of big names that haven't contested the shield since Richie McCaw and Dan Carter helped Canterbury claim it from Wellington more than 10 years ago.
