Motorsport: Hard-charging Scott McLaughlin clinches third straight Supercars crown

Kiwi Scott McLaughlin has secured his third consecutive Supercars crown in the final race at Tailem Bend on Sunday afternoon.

Holding a 299-point lead over rival Jamie Whincup, McLaughlin only needed to finish ahead of the Aussie in the third outing at 'The Bend' to clinch another title.

McLaughlin came in second place behind winner Cameron Waters to put yet another championship beyond doubt.

Earlier, after winning the first of three races at the South Australia venue, McLaughlin stamped his domination with another, leading home Anton De Pasquale and Cameron Waters, with Whincup losing further ground in seventh.

Kiwi Fabian Coulthard beat pole-sitter McLaughlin off the start-line, but yielded to his teammate on lap seven. They seemed headed for a one-two finish, until Coulthard's car stopped 10 laps from the end.

Under the safety car, McLaughlin controlled the rest of the journey to win by 1.277s.

"It's a bummer about Fabs," said McLaughlin. "I think we were on for a one-two there but huge team game by Shell V-Power Racing.

"Fabs took it on the chin to let me go past at the start. I really appreciate that, he had a great car and had a great start.

"We’ll work on it and make sure we dot our i's, cross our t's.

"If we can get it done today that would be fantastic. If we don't, we'll put ourselves in the best position come Bathurst."
