Motorsport: Rivals chip into Scott Dixon's IndyCar lead after opening Mid-Ohio race

Scott Dixon remains in pole position to clinch his sixth IndyCar title but his lead atop the standings took a massive hit after finishing 10th in the opening race of a Mid-Ohio doubleheader on Sunday (NZ time).

Starting the race in 17th, Dixon made early inroads during the race but couldn't get any higher than 10th, as he claimed his second-lowest finish of the reduced IndyCar season.

Heading into the race, Dixon held a 96 point lead over Joseph Newgarden but after the latter finished second, the lead had been cut to 76 with four races remaining.

Australian Will Power won the 75-lap race to claim his 38th career win.

After the race, Dixon called the shortened races "boring".

The drivers will be back in action on Monday for the second race of the doubleheader, then there are no more races scheduled until next month with a doubleheader at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, before the season finale on October 26 in St Petersburg.
