NRL 2020: NZ Warriors' Eliesa Katoa cleared to return to New Zealand

Star forward Eliesa Katoa is free to return to New Zealand with the Warriors, when they fly back from Australia.

In May, Katoa and teammate Selestino Ravutaumada were both granted exemptions by Australian border authorities to travel with the squad to their base for the resumption of their 2020 campaign.

But in July, the NZ Government informed the club that neither will be allowed to re-enter the country when their season ends at the end of September, due to COVID-19 restrictions which prevent non-NZ citizens from entering the country.

Last month, Warriors chief executive Cam George confirmed that Ravutaumada had been given an exemption to re-enter New Zealand, and now Katoa has also been given the necessary border clearance to return home.

Surgery for a hand injury will likely prevent Katoa playing in either of the Warriors' final two fixtures against the Raiders, then Sea Eagles.

Meanwhile, Eels loan players Daniel Alvaro and George Jennings have said their goodbyes to their temporary teammates at the Warriors camp on Monday.

Both will return to Parramatta in preparation for the team's NRL finals campaign, after the Warriors' faint hopes of clinching a playoffs berth were ended with Sunday's loss to the Cronulla Sharks.

After dealing with every kind of adversity this year, George says he couldn't be prouder of the team.

"I think this year's shown what it means to be a Warrior,' George tells Newshub. "A lot of people would have walked away from the challenge."

"They've shown the public what our foundation of culture looks like, and we'll continue to build on that."

George says the experience could be a landmark for the club.

"Now we're going to recruit well and really go after what our future is. We'll look back on this and I think it will be a turning point for our future."

"We wanted to be in the finals, but we're really proud of the effort and extremely proud of the way the staff and players have demonstrated a real commitment and passion for our fans this year."
