US Open 2020: Kiwi doubles star Marcus Daniell advances with upset over seventh seeds

Kiwi doubles specialist Marcus Daniell and Austrian partner Philipp Oswald are through to the second round of the US Open, after stunning the seventh seeds at New York.

Daniell and Oswald claimed a straight sets 6-3 7-6 (5) win in 1h 40m over South Afican Raven Klaasen and Austrian Oliver Marach.

Klaasen previously partnered Kiwi Michael Venus to three ATP doubles titles, and finals at Wimbledon (2018) and last year's ATP World Tour Finals.

With the coronavirus pandemic reducing the doubles field to 32 teams, Danell and Oswald are now through to the round of 16, where they'll face American duo Christopher Eubanks and MacKenzie McDonald.

The best finish Daniell has achieved at Flushing Meadows was a third round appearance in 2016.

Top-ranked NZ doubles player Venus and current Australian partner John Peers face Americans Nathaniel Lammons and Nicholas Monroe in their first-round match on Friday (NZ time).
