Cricket: White Ferns' Amelia Kerr confident in breaking Rose Bowl drought

If you need any context regarding how long New Zealand's Rose Bowl drought has stretched, White Ferns star Amelia Kerr hadn't been born the last time NZ held the trophy.

But this year, there's renewed belief that the White Ferns have the ability to win the annual trans-Tasman series for the first time since 1999.

Heading into Saturday's opening one-day international, the 19-year-old allrounder says momentum is on their side, after their win over the world champions in the final Twenty20 on Wednesday.

"It was great to finish that series off with a win," Kerr tells Newshub.

"The big thing was knowing that we can beat the Australians and having that belief and confidence.

"It shows that we can compete and beat the world's best."

Kerr played a crucial hand in the win with both bat and ball, claiming two wickets, then playing a swashbuckling late cameo to blast her side to victory in the final over.

"I was just focusing on what I needed to do and the fields they had," she says.

"It's just learning all the time, the more you play them you can adjust and figure out how you're going to attack those bowlers in those late-game situations.

"The key thing was having that clarity and just backing myself to do the job.

Kerr still fondly recalls the first time she experienced beating Australia back in 2017, and is keen to recapture that feeling this weekend.

"That's still probably one of my favourite games, I think we bowled them about for about 66."

On a personal note, Kerr says she's pleased with how she's progressing, particularly with her bowling.

"I'm definitely improving as each game goes on - finding my rhythm and getting the right pace for the game."
