French Open 2020: Women's top seed Simona Halep crashes out, as qualifier Martina Trevisan reaches quarter-finals

Top seed Simona Halep is out of the French Open, after losing to Polish teenager Iga Swiatek in the fourth round in just 68 minutes.

Swiatek claimed a crushing 6-1 6-2 victory to reach her maiden Grand Slam quarter-final.

Halep came into the fourth-round clash on a 17-match unbeaten streak, after defeating 19-year-old Swiatek, ranked 54th in the world, 6-1 6-0 in 45 minutes at the same stage last year at Roland Garros.

"I wasn't experienced at all then," says Swiatek. "That was my first match in a big stadium - I was pretty stressed.

"Since then, I have made huge progress and I have played few big matches. It helped me a lot and right now I think I can handle the pressure."

Swiatek avenged that morale-sapping defeat and her victory under the closed roof of Court Philippe Chatrier in 68 minutes was no less impressive against the 2018 French Open champion, ranked No.2 in the world.

"I mean, it wasn't like I was scared because of that, because I lost in 45 minutes last year," she says. "It was kind of like motivating for me just to play better."

Halep arrived in Paris after claycourt victories in Prague and Rome, and was the overwhelming favourite to add a third Grand Slam trophy to her cabinet.

But Swiatek started with aggression and painted the red clay with winners, often leaving Halep rooted to the spot.

Swiatek hit 30 winners to Halep's 12, while the Polish player did not face a single breakpoint on her service games.

The former Wimbledon junior champion will next meet Italian qualifier Martina Trevisan, who also scripted an upset by defeating fifth-seeded Dutch Kiki Bertens 6-4 6-4.

The world No.159, who did not play tennis between 2009-14 because of an eating disorder, played aggressively throughout to set up a meeting with Swiatek.

"I came here two weeks ago to play the qualifiers and today I'm here in the quarter-finals," says Trevisan. "I can't believe it.

"I'm really honoured to play on this court with Bertens - she's an incredible player."

After 16 consecutive defeats to players in the top 100 from 2017-20, Trevisan has now posted four consecutive wins over such opponents in one week.

She is the first qualifier to reach the last eight at Roland Garros, since Yaroslava Shvedova in 2012 and the 10th overall in the women's draw, since tennis turned professional in 1968.

Third seed Elina Svitolina has ended the run of local hope Caroline Garcia, with a comfortable 6-1 6-3 win to move into her third quarter-final at Roland Garros.
