Golf: Kiwi Lydia Ko remains in touching distance of PGA Championship lead

Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko remains in touching distance of the leaders at the Women's PGA Championship after a steady second round on Saturday (NZ time).

After opening with a two-under par 68, Ko recorded an even-par 70 to sit two shots behind leader Carlota Ciganda midway through the round.

Ko's round consisted of a bogey, one birdie - which she sunk on the final hole - and 16 pars.

Her best results at the PGA Championships - one of five women's majors on the LPGA tour - was second in 2016.

She hasn't won a tournament since April 2018, but she's starting to discover the form which saw her once ranked top of women's golf with four top-15 finishes in seven tournaments since golf returned after the coronavirus pandemic.

In a boost to Ko's title hopes, world No. 2 Nelly Korda was forced to withdraw from the tournament midway through her second round due to back pain.

Elsewhere, fellow Kiwi Ryan Fox is six shots off the lead at the halfway stage of the European PGA Championship at Wentworth in England.

Fox shot a two-under par 70 in round two to be tied for 10th, with Shane Lowry and Matthew Fitzpatrick tied atop the leaderboard.

Also, Kiwi Danny Lee is tied for 125th at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas.

After two rounds, Lee is even-par and 14 shots behind co-leaders Martin Laird and Patrick Cantlay.

The tournament is Lee's first tournament since his meltdown at last month's US Open where he recorded a quintuple bogey nine - five shots over par - on the final hole of the second round, before withdrawing, citing a wrist injury.
