COVID-19 forces Halberg Awards into celebration of decade

  • 04/11/2020

The Halberg awards have been temporarily converted into a celebration of the decade's greatest sporting achievements.

With the pandemic having limited sporting endeavour in 2020, instead of its traditional focus on the best in Kiwi sports over the past year, the next edition of the awards will encompass the decade from 2010 to 2019.

Previous Halberg Awards winners across eight categories will vie for the Decade Champion honours.

Performances this year will be eligible for the 2021 awards, meaning those who have shone in 2020 - such as 2019's Halberg sportsman of the year Israel Adesanya, IndyCar champion Scott Dixon, and Supercars ace Scott McLaughlin - will still be recognised.

"With international sporting events being severely affected in 2020, the Halberg Foundation has decided it will include performances of merit this year into the 2021 sporting year,” said a Halbergs spokesperson.

The supreme Halberg Award winner of the decade will join the previous decade champions, including the likes of Sir Peter Snell (1960s), Sir John Walker (1970s) and Sir Richard Hadlee (1980s).

For the first time, Halberg will recognise category winners of the decade across the board, naming the best team, best para-athlete, best sportsman and best sportswoman, best coach, and the emerging athlete.

The public will also have their say in a vote on their favourite sporting moment of the decade.

The Halberg Awards Decade Champion event will take place February 18.
