Cricket: Blackcaps stars get chance make test claim in NZ A squad

Blackcaps limited-overs stars will get their chance to push for a spot in the test team, after being named in the NZ A squad for upcoming four-day games against West Indies A and Pakistan.

The NZ As will face West Indies A at Bay Oval on Thursday - the same day the Blackcaps face the Windies in the first of two tests at Seddon Park in Hamilton - while their match against Pakistan starts on December 10 in Queenstown.

Batsmen Glenn Phillips, who smashed a 46-ball century during the Blackcaps' 72-run over West Indies on Sunday along, and Devon Conway will feature in both four-day games, along with wicketkeeper Tim Seifert, all-rounder Scott Kuggelijn and spinner Ish Sodhi.

Phillips made his test debut at the start of the year, while Conway hasn't played the long form for New Zealand, but has topped the rankings in all three domestic formats for Wellington, highlighted by an unbeaten 327 against Canterbury in Plunket Shield.

Auckland Aces batsman Mark Chapman and Central Stags all-rounder Doug Bracewell will also play both games, after joining the Blackcaps T20 squad for Monday's dead-rubber against West Indies at Mt Maunganui.

Lockie Ferguson, who made his test debut last year, will feature against Pakistan, along with Jimmy Neesham, who last played red-ball cricket for the Blackcaps in 2017.

"We're delighted to name such strong squads to take on West Indies A and Pakistan," says Blackcaps selector Gavin Larson.

"It really does highlight the talent depth we currently have and underlines our intentions to look at a wide group of potential test players over this NZ A season.

"To have 10 Blackcaps included across the two games is a testament to that depth and we know the next tier of players get a lot of out of sharing a changing room with our internationals.

"To have guys in red-hot form like Glenn, Devon and Lockie is a bonus, and I know they'll be keen to prove what they can do in the longest form of the game.

"We're excited to unleash Lockie with the red-ball and see what challenges his extra pace can pose to Pakistan."
