Melbourne Cup: Tiger Moth jockey Kerrin McEvoy fined and suspended for excessive use of whip

Melbourne Cup jockey Kerrin McEvoy has been fined AU$50,000 and suspended 13 meetings for overuse of the whip in the final stages of Tuesday's race.

McEvoy rode Tiger Moth to second place at Flemington, but pleaded guilty to the charge of whipping the horse 13 times before the 100m mark and 21 times overall.

Jockeys are permitted to strike their mounts a maximum of five times before the 100m mark.

McEvoy is suspended until November 14.

The race was marred by controversy, when pre-race favourite Anthony Van Dyck was put down, after suffering a broken leg on the run to the finish.

South Australian McEvoy was trying to equal the record for most Cup wins by a jockey, after previous victories on Brew in 2000, Almandin in 2016 and Cross Counter in 2018.

The record is held by Bobby Lewis and Harry White, who both won four Cups.

The race was won by Twilight Payment.
