Squash: Kiwi star Paul Coll reaches Qatar Classic final

Kiwi squash star Paul Coll is through to the final of the Qatar Classic for the first time in his career after overcoming Fares Dessouk in a straight sets win on Saturday (NZ time).

Coll needed just 37 minutes to beat Dessouk 11-9, 11-0, 11-0 and the Kiwi will now face world No.1 Ali Farag for the title.

The final will be a repeat of  March's 2020 Windy City Open decider in Chicago when Egyptian Farag came from two games down to win the title in a thrilling battle.

Farag, who beat world champion Tarek Momen to reach the final, is the defending Qatar Classic.

This is Coll's second final in Qatar, as he lost in last year's World Squash Championships decider at the same venue to Momen almost 12 months ago.

"I've had two great years in Qatar in a row now, so hopefully I can go one further tomorrow," said Coll.

"I've got my work cut out for me, but I felt really good out there today and I'm really looking forward to tomorrow."

Farag is expecting a tough challenge from Coll.

"Paul [Coll] is very fit, so when he's fresher, it's even more scary," he said. "I will try to execute my game plan of squash better and if I can, I will give myself a chance.

"It will be a tough one, he has made two back-to-back finals in Qatar now, so he seems to like it.

"It's always a pleasure to play against him, he is such a warrior and competitor but in the right spirit of the game, so I'm really looking forward to it."
