Tokyo Olympics 2021: New Zealand track cycling squad named

Rio 2016 medallists Sam Webster and Ethan Mitchell are among a squad of 15 named for the New Zealand track cycling team for the Tokyo Olympics.

Webster and Mitchell will be joined by Sam Dakin in a men's sprint team hunting gold next year.

In total, six riders return from the Rio team, including Aaron Gate, Rushlee Buchanan and Jamie Nielson.

Current points race world champion Corbin Strong has been named as part of the men's team pursuit squad.

Gate, who will compete at his third Olympics, is excited to be named in the squad, after nearly a year of COVID-19 pandemic disruption.

"This is a big step towards the Olympic Games, so it's a really special milestone for us," he says.

"Being named means that despite all the stuff going on in the world, we can continue with our plan for Tokyo, put all our hard work to good use and really focus on putting our best foot forward."

Cycling New Zealand high performance director Martin Barras says the team mixes quality experience with exciting youth.

"The endurance squads have come off an outstanding 2019 season and through to early 2020, with some young talent combining with our established riders," Barras says.

"Both squads produced world-class performances, and have used the opportunity with the postponement to 2021 to focus on an extensive strength and conditioning training block.

"The sprint group are in a rebuilding phase and this year has allowed us to bring on some young talent to merge with our proven performers.

"While the world is in some turmoil, our riders have been singlemindedly focused on making the most of every session, with their sights firmly fixed on Tokyo."
