Blackcaps v Pakistan: Senior statesmen nearing major milestones for Blackcaps

It could be milestones galore for the Blackcaps during the Boxing Day test against Pakistan.

Two senior Blackcaps in Ross Taylor and Tim Southee could bring up remarkable milestones at Bay Oval.

Taylor just needs to make it onto the field to achieve his mark as the most capped Blackcap in history.

Currently sitting on 437 international caps over all three formats for New Zealand, Taylor is tied for the most caps with Daniel Vettori, who has held the record since he took it off former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming.

The batting legend is the only New Zealander to play over 100 matches in each of the three formats, which shows just how versatile his game is.

The next best of current players is Martin Guptill who sits on 324 caps but has become a limited-over specialist, so his rise up the leaderboard has slowed.

The second big milestone is Southee who is just four wickets away from bringing up 300 test wickets for New Zealand.

He would be only the third player to do so alongside Vettori and the great Sir Richard Hadlee.

The next-best of the active players is Trent Boult on 272 and Neil Wagner on 215 - all will almost certainly join Southee at this remarkable feat in time.

Even with the disruption of COVID-19, Southee will look back on the year as one of his bests.

After being rested for the third and final test against Australia in Sydney, Southee has gone on to dismantle teams and rocket up the rankings.

Currently ranked the fourth-best test bowler, Southee has played every test match since being left out in Sydney.

He picked up 14 wickets in the two-test series against India in March and was named player of the series.

In the latest series against the West Indies, he picked up another 12 wickets to give him a total of 26 wickets for the year.

Even if he goes wicketless in the Boxing Day test, 2020 will be Southee's most successful year, taking an average of 6.5 wickets per match or 3.25 wickets per innings - statistics he has never come close to in the past.
