Former NZ cricketer John F Reid has died in Christchurch, aged 64.

The left-handed batsman played 19 tests and 25 one-day internationals for New Zealand between 1979 and 1986.

Reid boasted an impressive average of 46.28 through his 31 test innings and still holds the NZ record for the fewest innings to reach 1,000 test runs.

He finished his career with six test centuries and two fifties, as well as four half-centuries in the ODI arena.

Reid went on to make his mark in the world of sports administration, working as NZ Cricket's operations manager and high-performance manager.

He led the establishment of NZC’s National High Performance Centre at Lincoln University, which included the development of Bert Sutcliffe Oval.

Reid also spent nine years in senior roles at Sport New Zealand, supporting community sport and establishing a national programme to identify and develop young athletes.
