Cricket: History made as 14-year-old grabs five-wicket bag

Teenage phenomenon Kate Chandler has New Zealand cricket in awe, after ripping through the Canterbury Magicians batting line-up, grabbing her maiden five-wicket haul.

At just 14 years, one month and 17 days old, Chandler was making just her third appearance for Wellington Blaze at Christchurch's Hagley Oval.

Making the achievement even sweeter was the fact her victims included a current White Ferns player and the Magicians side were unbeaten coming into this contest.

The schoolgirl took 5/41 off just 9.1 overs, including a wicket maiden and a double wicket maiden. She claimed the scalps of current White Fern Lea Tahuhu and former NZ international Kate Ebrahim - the top runscorer in Hallyburton Johnstone Shield competition this season - who both fell in the 35th over, as the teen's star turn began in her second spell.

Chandler went into her first match against the Magicians with a total of three career wickets from her first two appearances this season, after grabbing 3/39 against the Central Hinds a fortnight ago.

Chandler's latest haul was the 14th best in Blaze domestic one-day history and ensured the Wellingtonians dismissed their hosts for just 155 in 46.1 overs.

She also helped Blaze wicketkeeper Jess McFadyen claim five dismissals in the innings, including a catch and stumping off Chandler's bowling, and a 50th domestic one-day in the process.
