Golf: Weather delays Lydia Ko's bid for third 'Major' title at US Open

Kiwi Lydia Ko will have to wait a little longer in her bid for a third 'Major' title at the US Open in Houston, Texas.

Heavy rain has fallen on the Cypress Creek course at the Champions Golf Club, delaying the final round for the tournament leaders.

Ko was scheduled to begin her round at 4:24am (NZ time), but play was suspended before the contenders could reach tee off. While the greens held up to the wet conditions, the fairways were unplayable and with lightning predicted, the round was postponed until Tuesday.

At four under par, Japanese Hinako Shibuno held a one-shot lead over American Amy Olson, with Ko tied for fifth on even par, after carding a one-over 72 on Sunday.

Of the early starters, former champion Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand birdied her first hole to move into the tie with Ko, before the rain fell.

The Kiwi hope has been steady throughout the tournament, with rounds of 71, 70 and 72, mixing an eagle, six birdies, six bogeys and a double bogey over the first three days.

One the world's top-ranked women's golfer, Ko has won two Major titles - the 2015 Evian Championship and 2016 ANA Inspiration, but has struggled for consistency in recent years.

She has found better form this year, with four top-10 finishes, including a tie for second at the Marathon Classic in August and a tie for fourth in her most recent outing at last month's Pelican Championship.
