Wales' Gerwyn Price has blitzed Gary Anderson to to claim his first PDC darts world championship at Alexandra Palace on Monday (NZ time)

The former professional rugby player made short work of two-time champion Anderson, easing to a convincing 7-3 victory to become the first Welsh world champ.

Once a front-rower for Welsh side Neath, Price gave up rugby in 2014 to focus full-time on darts.

"I've never ever felt pressure like that in my life," the 35-year-old said.

"I think it's going to take a couple of days to sink in. I'm walking on cloud now - it means the world."

The victory also lifts Price above Dutch great Michael Van Gerwen to No.1 in the world rankings.

'The Iceman' also pocketed a winner's cheque of £500,000 ($NZ950,054).
