X Games: Kiwi Nico Porteous claims ski superpipe gold at Aspen

Kiwi skiier Nico Porteous has snatched X Games gold in the ski superpipe at Aspen, Colorado.

Halfway through the four-run competition, the 2019 bronze medallist sat one spot off the podium, but wowed the judges - and rivals - with a performance that included back-to-back 1620s.

The feat catapulted him into a lead that none of his opponents were able to better over the last round.

"I'm kind of lost for words right now," Porteous, 19, said afterwards. "I had one goal this week and that was to do back-to-back 16s.

"I'd been working on that for the past year and it's been in my mind for the last year-and-a-half.

"All I can say is everyone killed it and I seriously think that was one of the most amazing pipe comps that’s ever been done. It was super special to be a part of it."

The 2018 Winter Olympic bronze medallist went one better than teammate Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, who captured a silver medal in the snowboard slopestyle earlier in the day.
