Blackcaps v Bangladesh: Opener Tamim Iqbal heralds PM Ardern's response to Christchurch mosque attacks

Bangladesh opening batsman Tamim Iqbal has praised NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern for her response to the terrorist attack almost exactly two years ago in Christchurch.

As a gunman opened fire on two Christchurch mosques on March 15 2019, the Bangladesh cricketers were very nearly caught in the atrocity, on their way to their own Friday prayers at the Al Noor mosque.

"I should mention the Prime Minister," Iqbal says. "The way she acted during those difficult times was really appreciated by all Bangladeshis.

"She did a fantastic job. If I ever get the chance to meet her, I'll personally go and say thank you."

The horrors of that day haven't altered Tamim's view of New Zealand as a country.

"This is my, probably, fourth or fifth time to New Zealand," he says. "We always look forward to coming to New Zealand, it's a beautiful country, very nice people."
