Kia ora, good morning and welcome to Newshub's live coverage of the opening One Day International between the Blackcaps and Bangladesh at Dunedin's University Oval.

It's been 372 days since the Blackcaps last played an ODI and that was against Australia at an empty Syndey Cricket Ground. The Kiwis have only played four 50-over contests since the Cricket World Cup final, a day fans have tried to forget.

The New Zealanders come into this series opener without two key players in captain Kane Williamson and senior statesmen Ross Taylor.

Tom Latham, who'll play his 100th ODI at the same venue he made his 50-over debut back in 2012, will captain the side while Devon Conway is likely to take Williamson's place at No.3.

Central Districts batsman Will Young will be eying up the No.4 spot and potential debut while Canterbury all-rounder Daryl Mitchell could also make his first appearance for the third-ranked Blackcaps in ODIs.

Bangladesh have recent form on their side and this is their favourite format of the game. They defeated West Indies 3-0 at home recently, with many of their experienced batsmen being among the runs and before that they trounced Zimbabwe 3-0.

The tourists have been in the country for three weeks due to quarantine but that has given them ample time to prepare themselves as they look for their first ever ODI victory in New Zealand.

They've brought in a familiar face into their coaching staff, with former Blackcaps captain Daniel Vettori helping the side who sit seventh in the ODI rankings.

The Tigers will be without No.1 ODI all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan as his wife has just given birth with their third child and his exclusion will be a massive loss for the young touring side.

They will rely a lot on the big three in Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah if they're to trouble the home team but also have Liton Das, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mustafizur Rahman who'll need to step up and be the match-winners they have been in the past.

The last time these two sides faced off was in the 2019 Cricket World Cup at The Oval where the Kiwis scrapped home by two wickets chasing down 244.

Blackcaps: Tom Latham (c, wk), Martin Guptill, Devon Conway, Will Young, Henry Nicholls, Jimmy Neesham, Mitch Santner, Kyle Jamieson, Tim Southee, Matt Henry, Trent Boult, Mark Chapman, Ross Taylor, Daryl Mitchell

Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal (c), Liton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mosaddek Hossain, Mohammad Mithun, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mahmudullah, Soumya Sarkar, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud, Taskin Ahmed

'Dream come true' : Blackcaps' star Conway eyes test selection

He may likely be heading into his one-day international debut against Bangladesh in Dunedin on Saturday, but Blackcaps batsman Devon Conway still has one eye on playing test cricket for his adopted country.

With both Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor ruled out of the three-match series, 29-year-old Conway is almost certain to ascend to the New Zealand ODI first XI, having already affirmed his position as a regular in the Blackcaps' Twenty 20 setup.

Despite only qualifying as eligible to represent New Zealand late last year, Conway has quickly become an all-format prospect for the Blackcaps.

While an ODI debut is a near certainty for Conway, cracking the world-leading test squad is a much different proposition, with the Blackcaps' red-ball team firming as one of the most settled in New Zealand's history.

The classy left-hander's form for Wellington across all formats is irresistible. His record in first-class cricket though stands tallest, averaging over 47, with 18 hundreds and a best score of 327 not out.

Conway though, is happy to bide his time and wait for that chance to come.

"That would be like a dream come true," Conway says.

"For me, as a young guy growing up, it's always been a goal to play test cricket.

"I've just got to continue being patient. It'll be important for me to score some runs tomorrow, and just keep that momentum going through the ODI campaign, and keep that form that I've had in the T20s in the past."

But while Conway himself concedes he doesn't know when he'll get the chance to don the whites for New Zealand, Blackcaps batting coach Luke Ronchi assures that it's a "when," and not an "if."

"If a position was to come up, he'd more than likely jump at it, and be good enough wherever it might be," Ronchi says.

"That's the nature of New Zealand cricket at the moment, and the Blackcaps. The guys have been playing some fantastic cricket and batting well in all their positions.

"Sometimes it's the unluckiness, I guess, of being a batter. Trying to find a position is hard.

"But, if given a chance, if a position did open up through or things like that, then he will grab it - and he will be good enough. Definitely."
