Rugby league: NZ Warriors release injured hooker Karl Lawton

The NZ Warriors have released injured hooker Karl Lawton after the No.9 requested to leave the club.

The 25-year-old rake will miss most of the 2021 campaign with a ruptured Achilles tendon, suffered during a pre-season training session in December.

Club CEO Cameron George says Lawton has an opportunity to sign a long-term contract with another club, and they didn't want to stand in his way.

"We've reluctantly agreed to Karl’s request given he has an opportunity to join another club for the next two seasons," George says.

"We're really grateful for what he has done for the club on and off the field over the last three years.

"We wish him all the best in his recovery from this injury and look forward to seeing him resume his career."

Lawton joined the Warriors in 2018 from the Gold Coast Titans playing 33 games.
